(01) Overview
A single-storey house wrapped around two courtyards: one for the morning, one for the evening.
The clients are both early risers and late readers. We gave each habit its own courtyard: an east court for breakfast and a west court, planted with a single fig tree, for the end of the day.
Light wells
Where the plan is too deep for windows, white-rendered light wells three metres tall pull daylight into the bathrooms and the library. From inside they read as small, bright rooms of sky.
The roof is a thin concrete plate on steel beams, left exposed, so the shadow of the structure moves across the courtyards through the year.
