(01) Overview

A contemporary art gallery inserted into a nineteenth-century rope warehouse and lit entirely from above.

The warehouse was a single room 60 metres long, built to stretch ships’ rope. We kept its granite shell and its length, and placed the new galleries inside it like furniture.

North light only

A new sawtooth roof faces due north. Artworks never see direct sun, yet the rooms change colour through the day as clouds cross the river. Artificial light is used after dusk only.

Between the galleries, an eleven-metre corridor is left deliberately dark, so that each room is entered from shadow and feels brighter than it is.

Programme

Three galleries, an archive, a reading room and a small courtyard café run by the foundation. The building opened in May 2023 with a retrospective of the photographer Ana Lúcia Teles.
