Every Thursday at five, we close the shutters, switch off the studio lights and put the week’s model under a single desk lamp. The lamp sits on a jointed arm calibrated to the latitude of the site.
Why white card
White card has no texture and no colour, so the only thing left to look at is light. A model in timber or cork flatters a design; white card tells the truth about it.
We move the lamp through the day — morning, noon, evening, winter, summer — and photograph each position with the same 85 mm lens. The photographs are pinned on the wall next to the plans.
What we look for
Rooms that never receive direct sun at any time of year
Edges that cast a shadow we did not intend
Openings that are too large to hold a beam of light
The one moment each room looks its best
